A copywriter based in Bournemouth
It’s rather obvious of a copywriter to say they love language, but it’s worth stating what you love and why. I studied literature at Sussex University and fell down a rabbit hole of imagined worlds. I drag myself out of bed early each day to read --I believe it’s important. I believe imagination is vitally important.
I ran a small English language school in Italy and built a reputation as a highly creative teacher. I spent four years nosing through grammar books, tracing the underbelly of language. This solid understanding of grammar and punctuation gives me an advantage as a writer in many subtle ways.
I write short stories. I have respect for simple, well-constructed prose without the clutter of too many metaphors. I believe in the maxim ‘show’ rather than ‘tell’. This often equates to stating benefits rather than features in copywriting.
While good writing is a lost art to some degree, there are still a fair number of writers who can string a decent sentence together; so the question you face as a business is --how do you choose?
It’s a difficult decision, but in so many areas of life you should choose someone you like, someone you trust and someone with a proven track record. I urge you to find someone who is truly creative, a writer who has it in their DNA.
A good partnership is one where the client has a tight brief, and the copywriter channels their creative forces into getting the measurable results outlined thus, or nailing the brand identity and tone of voice.
